Chestnut is a 4 year old, 14 pound Cairn Terrier mix who went from tangled and matted to absolutely dashing. Brought into a Southern California shelter with two of his buddies, he arrived with a coat that had clearly endured a tough stretch of life. Thanks to the rescue and a talented groomer, Chestnut now sports a clean, handsome look that perfectly matches the sweet, eager dog underneath. He is a small boy with a big heart and an irresistible charm.

Daily Routine and Home Life

Chestnut wakes up with his foster family at 5 a.m. Every morning starts with a quick trip to the front yard for a bathroom break, followed by breakfast. He enjoys two long walks each day and he has the energy to trot briskly and easily cover a couple of miles. In the evenings, he settles comfortably in the living room, happy simply being near his people. At night, he sleeps in his own bed placed right next to his fosters' bed, something that brings him calm and reassurance.

Personality and Adjustment

Chestnut arrived in his foster home anxious and overwhelmed - he'd been through a lot of change! After about three days, everything shifted. Chestnut began to understand the rhythm of the home and started relaxing into it. He learned the routine, trusted that his people weren't disappearing, and slowly allowed himself to settle. Now, he is calm and secure as long as his humans are nearby. He is absolutely a velcro dog— he follows from room to room, always wanting to be part of whatever is happening. At bedtime, he curls into his own bed and sleeps peacefully, soothed by knowing his people are close.

Chestnut has an energetic and lively personality outdoors and a calm, gentle presence indoors. He loves activity, loves being included, and loves the security of companionship.

Energy Level, Playfulness, and Behavior

Chestnut is a wonderful mix of energetic and relaxed. Outside, he is spirited and fast-paced, eager to walk and explore. Indoors, he is content to rest quietly on a blanket. He does not chew, dig, or destroy things. He will bark when left alone, so his adopters will need to work on teaching him that they will be back soon!

He walks on leash with enthusiasm. He has a naturally quick pace and can pull a bit out of excitement, especially when he sees dogs or people he wants to greet. He is incredibly social on walks and enjoys every encounter. He also appears to be housetrained if taken out regularly!

What Makes Chestnut Special

Chestnut is exceptionally cute— small, expressive, attentive, and eager to please. He is friendly with both people and dogs, listens well, and has a very endearing talent: when he wants something, he balances on his hind legs and sits up quietly, almost like a little squirrel. No one knows where he learned it, but it is a charming, irresistible habit that captures his sweetness perfectly.

Chestnut is ready for a home that will appreciate his loyalty, his gentle nature, and his deep desire to be part of a family. With patience, presence, and love, he will continue to evolve from the anxious dog who first arrived into the confident, connected companion he is meant to be.
