Source Backed Signals
What to know
Evidence-backed contextLimited
Roxee has limited cited overview evidence for Prednisone; use the official documents and your veterinarian's instructions for product-specific decisions.
Source: openFDA case USA-USFDACVM-2026-US-014449
Safety signal coverageReported signals
32 tracked reaction signals; 32 reported cases; 19 serious reports; 2 species groups. These are reporting and label-derived signals for interpretation with a veterinarian.
Source: openFDA case USA-USFDACVM-2026-US-014449
Interpretation guardrailNot causation
Adverse-event reports help form a watch list, but they do not prove the medication caused the reaction and they are not a risk ranking between medications.
Evidence tension
Stronger signalLabel / review
Official labels, package inserts, and reviewed summaries carry more weight than isolated reports.
Source: openFDA case USA-USFDACVM-2026-US-014449
Weaker signalReported data
Case reports and openFDA terms are useful for pattern awareness, but they are incomplete, can include multiple exposures, and do not estimate an individual pet's probability of harm.
Reaction signal map
Most reported reactionsTop terms
Unsteady walking (ataxia) (1 reports), Loss of appetite (1 reports), Blood in urine (1 reports), Blood in faeces (1 reports), Aspiration pneumonia (1 reports)
Schnauzer - Miniature (1), Chihuahua (1), ['Shepherd Dog - Australian', 'Dog (unknown)'] (1), Retriever - Labrador (1). These are report metadata, not proof that a breed is at higher risk.
What your vet may verify
Fit for this patientVet check
Verify whether Prednisone fits the pet's species, current diagnosis, age, weight, organ status, pregnancy/lactation status, and concurrent medications.
Evidence limitationsEvidence review
Separate label-backed warnings from adverse-event reports and owner observations before changing the plan.
What to watch next
Watch listOwner-safe
Avoid combining with NSAIDs, Use caution with diabetes, infections, GI ulcer history, wobbly/unsteady walking, Loss of appetite, Blood in urine
Call sooner ifEscalation
Repeated vomiting or diarrhea. Severe lethargy (hard to wake, very low energy). Collapse or fainting.

Composition / specifications
Each milliliter of sterile aqueous suspension contains 10 to 40 milligrams of prednisone.
Horses
Indication
It is used for conditions requiring an anti-inflammatory agent.
Dosage
100 to 400 milligrams intramuscularly, repeating if necessary. If no response is observed after 3 to 4 days of therapy, reevaluate diagnosis.
Limitations
Do not use in viral infections. Except in emergency therapy, do not use in animals with tuberculosis, chronic nephritis, or Cushings's disease. With infections, use appropriate antibacterial therapy with and for at least 3 days after discontinuance of use and disappearance of all signs of infection. Clinical and experimental data have demonstrated that corticosteroids administered orally or parenterally to animals may induce the first stage of parturition when administered during the last trimester of pregnancy and may precipitate premature parturition followed by dystocia, fetal death, retained placenta and metritis. Not for use in horses intended for food. Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
Dogs
Indication
It is used for conditions requiring an anti-inflammatory agent.
Dosage
0.25 to 1.0 milligram per pound of body weight for 3 to 5 days or until a response is noted. Treatment may be continued with an orally administered dose.

Species: Dog • Horse • Cat
